Ortodonti

Orthodontics, a specialty of dentistry, deals with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of irregularities in our teeth and jaws. Irregular teeth or jaws, called orthodontic malocclusion, can be corrected with braces.

Curvature of our teeth can be caused by a combination of many factors, or it can sometimes develop as a result of simple negligence in childhood. Although our genetic structure from our family is largely responsible for the shape of our teeth and jaws, it can also develop due to early loss of milk teeth and neglect of this situation. It is very important to detect the orthodontic problem at an early stage and to plan the treatment by taking the necessary precautions in order to have a beautiful smile.

Why are teeth crooked and how should they be treated?

Orthodontic disorders can be caused by genetic, environmental or functional habits separately or together. In cases where tooth sizes are not compatible with jaw sizes, usually as a result of different genetic transmissions, teeth may be crowded or spaced apart to fit into the jaw.

Sometimes finger sucking or prolonged use of pacifiers and bottles can cause orthodontic disorders. Regardless of the source, it is possible to bring the teeth to the position they should be in order to provide a beautiful smile aesthetics in dental and skeletal disorders by applying orthodontic treatment.

Is there an age for orthodontic treatment?

We can correct teeth with orthodontic treatment at any age. What is required for braces is a strong bone and healthy tooth structure. It is only the way the treatments are applied that changes with age. The methods applied in cases where there is no problem in the lower or upper jaw but the teeth are crooked are generally similar at any age. The only difference is that the treatment is likely to take relatively longer than in earlier ages due to the slowing down of bone metabolism as we get older. However, the treatment of skeletal disorders, which we also call the upper or lower jaws being ahead or behind normal, should be performed during the period of rapid growth and development.

This period is determined by the orthodontist according to the patient's bone age. In cases where skeletal problems are recognized late, if bone development is complete, this problem can only be corrected with jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery). The American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) recommends an orthodontic examination at the age of 8. We also support early examination and welcome you to our clinic for free examination and detailed x-ray analysis in order to detect the problem, if any, to take the necessary precautions and not to miss the rapid growth period.
